LaStone Therapy or Hot Stone Therapy
What is LaStone Therapy?
LaStone Therapy involves the use of heated and cooled stones, which are applied to the body to bring about relief to tired and sore muscles
Over 3000 years ago ancient civilisations were using hot stone massage believing that hot stones were beneficial for relaxing and cleansing the body and grounding the soul and soothing the mind .
The La Stone (Hot Stone Massage as it is sometimes called), originates in ancient India and China but also amongst the North American Indians . These people had traditions and healing rituals in which stones were a vital part …..these were laid in patterns on the body, people wore stones as protection or carried them. Stones have been used as diagnostic tools as well as in childbirth where cold stones were used to stem blood flow.
How does LaStone work ?
Hot stone massage combines the benefits of thermotherapy ( the use of heat applications ) with massage strokes, the benefit being in that the stones are used to create a deeper and more relaxing treatment .
Cryotherapy , or the use of cold stones is also very beneficial in the case of trauma or injury , sinus problems and in conjunction with the hot stones are major circulation stimulants very powerful in the case of a detox treatment .
Basalt stones (volcanic stones which retain their heat) are heated and used on the skin which help the body then absorb the applied moisturising and therapeutic oils and at the same time prepares the muscles so that the therapist can work into the deeper muscle layers.
One stroke of heated basalt stones is equivalent to five manual massage strokes .
LaStone therapy begins with gentle stretches and a Swedish massage to warm up the body’s muscle tissue. After this, you will be asked to sit up whilst two rows of warm stones are then placed on the treatment table, in alignment with both sides of your spine. These are then covered with a soft towel to protect you from the heat as you then lay back down on them.
Stones of varying weights are then placed on the body’s key energy channels, including the seven main chakras. Pebble-sized warm stones are placed between your toes and medium-sized flat stones are placed in your palms. Both hot and cool stones are also used as an extension of my hands while doing Swedish massage. This method of alternating between heat and cold both stimulates and relaxes the circulatory system, which is very detoxifying for the body. In cooperation with heated stones, chilled marble stones create a dramatic movement of fluids within the body.
It’s not that easy for a therapist to maintain their sensitivity of touch with a big rock in their hand! The body can start to overheat which is another reason that La Stone is the answer using both hot and cold stones.
